Trauma & PTSD Counseling
in Palatine

One of the largest obstacles to overcoming trauma is the realization that you are worthy of recovery.

Trauma & PTSD Counseling

If you are suffering from trauma you are not alone. Statistics worldwide show that approximately 7 out of 10 of us have experienced at least one traumatic event in our lifetime. Yet, even though trauma is so prevalent, discussing it is still taboo. Since trauma is so prevalent, society should not be afraid of an open dialogue. Not doing so perpetuates the isolation and shame for the victims still suffering.

Trauma can come in many different forms and it can be unpredictable. Just as the types of trauma vary, how one is affected by trauma also varies. A person who lives through a terrible natural disaster, such as an earthquake may experience trauma. The individual who experienced a natural disaster can acknowledge that they did not cause it, nor have any control over such an event. Allowing yourself to not blame yourself can actually be a catalyst for moving forward. However, a rape victim, or child that was sexually abused, finds it difficult not to feel some blame. Neither the natural disaster nor the sexual assault was caused by the victims, but victims of the latter tend to take on some of the responsibility. Self-blame can be a reason a person continually re-lives the pain.

Trauma Therapy Services are Available in Inverness, Arlington Heights, and Palatine Illinois.

So if self-blame can impede recovery, why would a victim hold on to it? One consideration is that it may give the victim some form of control. If the victim accepts part of the blame they may believe they have the power to prevent any future trauma. But if the victim was just walking down the street, how could such a tragedy be avoided? To prevent it, should they no longer walk down the street?

Like all healing, we need to allow the people suffering to guide their own recovery. A person can have so much taken from them that the last thing they need is to be stripped of the power to make their own decisions regarding their recovery. At Purple Flowers 365, we deal with issues of safety, trust, power, control, esteem, and intimacy. This is done at the individual’s own pace and with the individual’s consent.
