Self Esteem Counseling in Palatine

Happiness and contentment comes from
how you feel about yourself.

Self Esteem and Perception of Self

Everyone has their own unique story; and an individual’s experiences often defines and shapes their perception of self, and others. But this perception isn’t always correct. Why is this important? Because perception of self affects how you think about yourself.

The Importance of Having Healthy Self Esteem

Where does this sense of self come from? Often, the positive image we have of ourselves, or do not have, is based on the acceptance others show us. This is especially true in childhood. If a child is given love, security, acceptance and validation- in childhood – they are more likely to have a better sense of self as an adult. They are also less likely to accept toxic and demeaning relationships later in life; both personally and professionally. However this can work in reverse. The child who regularly experienced emotional pain and distress is more likely to struggle with their self image. In-turn they may seek relationships with others, often unconsciously, who have a similar self image.

We all need and desire connection; and who we connect with has a direct correlation of how we see ourselves. An individual who suffers from anxiety, depression, and perpetual indecision will usually not feel comfortable around those striving to live their best life – and vice versa. How one views themselves can alter a variety of life decisions and outcomes. Research has shown that how we see ourselves has an effect on how we love, and how we allow others to love us..  Therapy for low self-esteem is a process of self discovery. Since low self-esteem is a learned behavior, it can be unlearned. Through our thoughts and behaviors shame can be reduced, and self worth can be increased.
