Autonomy: The ability to direct ones own life

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic therapy is a counseling approach that emphasizes the individual’s inherent capacity for self-development, self-actualization, and personal growth. It emphasizes the significance of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and personal responsibility by emphasizing each individual’s distinct experiences, values, and perspectives. Humanistic therapy is a supportive and empowering approach to recovery and personal development.

Humanistic therapy is founded on the notion that people have an innate desire for self-actualization, which is the process of reaching one’s full potential and living an authentic, meaningful existence. In this modality a therapist’s philosophy is to create a secure and nonjudgmental environment in which clients can explore their emotions, thoughts, and experiences without fear of criticism or judgment.

Humanistic therapy, sometimes referred to as person-centered therapy, positions the client at the center of the therapeutic process. Therapists who practice this technique demonstrate empathy, trust and acceptance; to create a therapeutic relationship that is characterized by authenticity, and mutual respect, in which clients feel safe exploring their inner experiences and freely expressing themselves. Humanistic therapy emphasizes self-awareness and self-exploration as essential for personal development and recovery. Our Therapists, at Purple Flowers 365 Counseling Services, assist clients in gaining a deeper comprehension of their emotions, thoughts, and actions. Clinicians, in collaboration with their clients, work on greater self-awareness and self-acceptance by encouraging them to investigate their values, beliefs, and goals. Often it’s helpful to contrast what we think we should believe, versus how we actually live (behave).

Humanistic therapy also puts great importance on the “Here and Now”: Humanistic therapy prioritizes the present moment by concentrating on the client’s current experiences and concerns; as clients identify and comprehend their immediate emotions, thoughts, and sensations. By remaining in the present moment and investigating the “here and now,” clients can gain insight into patterns and triggers that may be affecting their well-being.

Facilitation of Self-Actualization: Humanistic therapy also tries to guide clients toward their highest potential and most important values. Therapists assist clients in identifying their strengths, passions, and objectives and collaborate with them to develop strategies that align their lives with their true selves. The therapeutic process encourages personal development, and self-discovery. For without understanding our behaviors, and the effects of such behaviors, how would we know what to change?

As therapists we believe clients should embrace their capacity to make decisions, and ultimately assume responsibility for their lives. This includes recognizing their role in shaping their own experiences and empowering them to make positive adjustments in accordance with their values and goals; placing a premium on congruence (where the ideal self and actual life experiences are similar), authenticity, transparency and truthfulness.

Humanistic therapy acknowledges the interdependence of human wellbeing. By incorporating the physical (body), emotional (feelings), cognitive (thoughts), and spiritual (sacred dimensions), one can achieve a more holistic understanding of self. To facilitate this mind-body-spirit integration, they may employ mindfulness practices, expressive therapies, or body-centered approaches.

Humanistic therapy emphasizes the client’s capacity for personal development, resiliency, and self-empowerment; by a client identifying their strengths, enhancing their resiliency, and developing coping mechanisms to surmount obstacles. They cultivate a sense of autonomy and provide clients with the tools and skills necessary to navigate life’s challenges and make positive changes. Importantly, humanistic therapy is a collaborative process in which the client actively participates in his or her healing voyage. Therapist and client engage in open dialogue and collaborative decision-making, allowing clients to set therapeutic objectives and direct the course of treatment.
